In Arno’s letter to Nelson Mandela, he committed to building a nation. In his small way he said he would do this by starting where he believed he can have an impact – on his farm. So he committed to flying the South African flag, learning the words to the national anthem, and building a team on his farm all committed to nation-building.

THE LETTER WAS PUBLISHED in the letters page of a local Afrikaans newspaper which was where we discovered it. With much coercion, we eventually convinced Arno to allow us to make a short film of his letter so that others, in various ways, would be inspired to action as well. At the end of 2010, Nelson Mandela sat down after lunch with his daughter Zinziwe and his close friend, Ahmed Kathrada, and watched the film of Arno`s letter. We are told that he was moved and wanted to keep a copy of it to watch it again. ‹‹ GO BACK

ARNO REUVERS is a South African Afrikaans fruit farmer who runs his family’s apple and pear farm just outside of Cape Town. The movie Invictus, about Nelson Mandela’s role in the 1995 Rugby World Cup, had a profound impact on Arno. For the first time, contrary to his prejudices and up-bringing, he understood that Mandela used that World Cup to build a nation and to help white and black South Africans begin the slow process of reconciliation. Dear visitor[:::]In 2009, Arno Reuvers, an Afrikaans South African fruit farmer, wrote a letter to Nelson Mandela, which was published in a local newspaper. He had just seen the film Invictus, and in his letter he spoke of how he came to rise above his prejudices and understand what South Africa’s first black president was trying to do through the Rugby World Cup – build a nation. He wrote the letter to share his very personal change with Nelson Mandela.[:::]So many people all over world, young and old, rich and poor, famous and unknown have been touched by some piece of Nelson Mandela. Letters to Mandela is a place for all of us, just like Arno, to share what Nelson Mandela has meant to us in our individual lives, in our countries and to the world.
